Selecting Ceramic Fiber Boards for Aluminum Melting Furnaces
Selecting Ceramic Fiber Boards for Aluminum Melting Furnaces
For furnace manufacturers building aluminum melting and holding furnaces, the focus is often on the hot-face refractory—typically dense castables or high-alumina bricks that resist the corrosive molten aluminum. However, the performance and safety of the furnace heavily depend on the back-up insulation layer.
Ceramic fiber boards are the industry standard for this back-up insulation. But which grade should you choose?
Why Ceramic Fiber Boards are Preferred
Behind the dense hot-face material, ceramic fiber boards provide a highly effective thermal barrier. Because they are pressed and rigid, they maintain their shape and structural integrity, preventing the castables from drying out too quickly or cracking during the initial heat-up.
Furthermore, their low thermal conductivity ensures that the outer steel shell of the furnace remains at a safe temperature, protecting both the equipment and the operators.
Choosing the Right Temperature Grade
Although molten aluminum is processed at around 700°C to 800°C, the hot-face surface and the immediate back-up layers can experience much higher localized temperatures due to the burner flames or electric heating elements.
- 1260°C Boards: Suitable for the outer back-up layers where the temperature has already dropped significantly.
- 1400°C High-Alumina Boards: Highly recommended for the inner back-up layer directly behind the castable. These boards offer higher thermal stability and lower shrinkage, providing a safety buffer in case of hot-face cracking.
Custom Machining for Complex Geometries
Aluminum furnaces often feature complex shapes, such as tap-out holes, burner ports, and thermocouple passages. Instead of cutting boards on-site and creating gaps, furnace manufacturers can utilize CNC-machined ceramic fiber parts. With a tolerance of ±1mm, these custom parts ensure a perfectly tight seal, eliminating thermal bridges and extending the furnace's service life.
