Why Does My Ceramic Fiber Board Crack? Causes and Solutions
Ceramic fiber boards are prized for their low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. But what happens when your furnace lining develops cracks? Before assuming a material defect, it's important to understand the common causes — many of which are preventable.

Here's a practical guide to diagnosing and preventing cracks in ceramic fiber boards.
Common Types of Cracks
Not all cracks are the same. Identifying the type of crack is the first step to understanding its cause:
- Surface hairline cracks — fine lines on the board surface, often cosmetic and not affecting structural integrity.
- Through-thickness cracks — cracks that run from the hot face to the cold face, compromising insulation performance.
- Edge chipping or corner fractures — mechanical damage during handling or installation.
- Shrinkage gaps — not cracks per se, but gaps that open between boards or at joints due to fiber shrinkage at high temperatures.
Cause 1: Temperature Grade Too Low
This is the most common cause of premature cracking.
Many users confuse classification temperature with continuous use temperature. Classification temperature is the short-term maximum a board can withstand. Continuous use temperature — the temperature at which the board can operate reliably over its intended service life — is typically 100°C to 150°C lower.
For example, a 1260°C board has a recommended continuous use temperature of approximately 1100°C. If your furnace operates at 1200°C day in and day out, that board will eventually fail — often through cracking, shrinkage, or embrittlement.
Solution: Select a classification temperature at least one grade higher than your actual continuous operating temperature. If in doubt, consult our technical team for a free recommendation.
Cause 2: Excessive Thermal Shock
Ceramic fiber boards have excellent thermal shock resistance — but they are not immune to it. Rapid, repeated heating and cooling cycles can induce stress that leads to cracking.
Thermal shock is most common in batch-type furnaces that are opened frequently, or in processes where the furnace is heated and cooled rapidly between cycles.
Solution: For applications with frequent thermal cycling, consider using a higher temperature grade (which typically has better thermal shock resistance) or a lower density board (160–200 kg/m³) which has lower heat storage and responds more gently to temperature changes. Also, avoid placing cold workpieces directly on the board surface.
Cause 3: Installation Errors
Improper installation is a leading cause of cracking that has nothing to do with the material itself.
Common installation mistakes include:
- Insufficient expansion gaps — boards need room to expand when heated. If installed too tightly against each other or the furnace shell, compressive stress can cause cracking.
- Uneven support — boards that are not evenly supported may flex under their own weight at high temperatures, leading to stress fractures.
- Incorrect anchor placement — for modules or mechanically fixed boards, anchors placed too close to edges can create stress points.
- Using the wrong bonding agent — some bonding agents have different thermal expansion rates than the board, creating stress at the bond line.
Solution: Follow our installation guidelines. Leave adequate expansion gaps (typically 3–5mm between boards). Ensure the furnace shell is clean and flat before installation. Use recommended bonding agents and follow curing instructions.
Cause 4: Mechanical Damage
Ceramic fiber boards are rigid but can be brittle. They are not designed to withstand heavy mechanical impact or abrasion.
Common sources of mechanical damage:
- Dropping tools or workpieces onto the board surface
- Scraping during loading and unloading
- High-velocity gas or particle erosion (in some applications)
- Vibration from adjacent equipment
Solution: Train operators on proper handling. Use protective covers or sacrificial layers in high-wear areas. For applications with high gas velocity or particulate erosion, consider a higher density board (220–240 kg/m³) or apply a rigidizer coating to harden the surface.
Cause 5: Moisture or Contamination
Ceramic fiber boards are porous. If they absorb moisture before or during installation, that moisture turns to steam at high temperatures — and expanding steam can cause cracking or spalling.
Similarly, contamination from oils, fluxes, or other chemicals can react with the fiber at high temperatures, weakening the structure and leading to cracks.
Solution: Store boards in a dry, covered area before installation. If boards have been exposed to moisture, dry them gradually before heating. Avoid contact with oils, solvents, or reactive chemicals.
When Is Cracking a Material Defect?
While most cracks are caused by the factors above, material defects can occur. Signs that cracking may be a product quality issue include:
- Cracking occurs during the first few heating cycles despite correct installation and operating conditions
- Cracks appear uniformly across multiple boards from the same batch
- The board exhibits unexpected shrinkage or deformation beyond normal limits
